Car Repairs

January 21, 2011

Part-time income: $122.96 (weekly, fewer hours due to funeral)

I had already paid all the bills that were due, bought groceries and gassed up both cars, and was thrilled to see there was about $600 left, after adding in this part-time paycheck.  While we were debating whether to replenish our totally zapped emergency fund (Dave Ramsey’s advice) or send the money as an extra payment to Visa, Murphy came knocking on our front door.  Our oldest daughter called with car trouble, which turned out to cost….. wait for the drum-roll……….$600, of course!  This daughter is in her last semester of grad school and is paying her own way, so we really haven’t been asked to help until now and were glad to have the cash when she needed it.  We sent her the repair money and sat tight for a week: a major spending fast.

The big financial debate will have to wait until next month.

I’d love to hear from other parents who are still helping adult children financially.  How do you determine where to draw the line?
