Lottery Winnings

January 14, 2011

Income:           $163. 94 (weekly)

Expenditures: $233.00 power bill
                             27.00 groceries
                               6.00 fast food (funeral travel)
                             22.00 misc. household
Total:              $ 288.00

You’ll notice that left a negative balance of $89, which, of course, kicked in our overdraft protection, to the tune of $100.  That’s our home equity line--- a huge, hungry monster crying to be fed.  Sigh! He’ll just have to wait.

I guess I could have paid the power bill late, but I’d rather pay on time and protect our credit rating, even if it means overdraft protection.  I know Dave Ramsey wouldn’t like it, and I’m sure that attitude is somewhat responsible for the size of this home equity monster. Hopefully, we’ll be able to start whittling away at it later this year.

We did have a little bit of positive news this week: I finally remembered to check the lottery scratch-off ticket my husband had bought me as a Christmas gag-gift, and I actually had won $25! Wow! The lottery is fairly new to our state and I think this is the first ticket we have purchased.  They were running TV commercials before Christmas, and I told Mr. S. “That’s what you can get me for Christmas---a winning lottery ticket!”  So he did.

I was very tempted to use my winnings to buy more lottery tickets, but reason prevailed and I pocketed the cash and used it for incidentals during the week.  I’m not sure whether I’ll play again.  It's tempting after my "big" win, but I know the odds are against me.  Way against me!

Do you play the lottery, and have you won?
